After careful deliberation, meticulous preparation and tons of stress, we ventured off with our dog Jameson and embarked on a journey of self-discovery by moving abroad. We left the comforts of home in Canada for Belize, hoping this would open us up to new experiences and opportunities.
This move abroad indeed presented us with some challenges - after all, starting anew in a new place is never easy. Like the time we almost had to change our travel plans because of our dog’s vaccinations, but we’ll talk about that another day. However, our sincere belief that completely immersing ourselves in a somewhat unfamiliar environment would make us smarter, more capable and more open-minded gave us the push we needed to take the plunge.
Moreover, countless other motivators encouraged our decision; the fascinating culture of Belize was an undeniable pull since our first visit in 2019 and again in 2022.
Ultimately, our strong determination to improve ourselves by travelling and discovering new things pushed us to start this life-changing adventure.
Alright, let’s get into the nitty-gritty and talk about why we really did it.
Life is short. We've discussed the importance of making the most of life— because it's limited! With that in mind, we've deliberately chosen not to squander away most of our precious time doing things we don’t enjoy, especially while we're still somewhat young. Now more than ever, we understand the importance of investing time and energy into experiences that add meaningful satisfaction to our lives because each passing second cannot be recovered, and time cannot be taken back. Life passes faster than we think.
Investing in our happiness. We both share a deep passion for doing the things that bring us the most fulfillment through meaningful activities and experiences. Even minor changes to our daily routines have led to moments that have been more rewarding than any material item ever could. By recognizing and embracing our passion for meaningful experiences and activities, we strive to bring ourselves fulfillment now which, in turn, we hope will positively influence our present and future.
Living an Intentional Life. Our decision to uproot our lives and move abroad was motivated by a deep longing for something more than the standard North American life presented to us. We felt strongly that there was a better way for us to live, one that should be chosen with intention and mindfulness. We wanted to free ourselves of the standard North American rat race and all its expectations. Instead, seeking moments of joy and contentment that fulfill our hearts. We know this sounds corny as hell, but it is incredible what kind of life can emerge when you dare to step outside pre-conceived notions of what is 'right.’ So far, we've had many incredible experiences while living intentionally; from this, we are confident — so many great things are possible when you actively pursue and choose your life path.
Following our Hearts. Our hearts have been pushing us in this direction for years. Our love of exploration and adventure continues to bond us - we have always wanted more than static living; instead, we choose to experience the world through our travels. Experiencing new cultures, landscapes, and people gives us an invaluable opportunity to grow and have some really amazing experiences. Through travel, we can expand our understanding of the world in ways that staying in one place has yet to do.
As you can see, we had plenty of reasons for our move to Belize. We have been pursuing this dream for a while (over 4 years), and now that we’re here, the possibilities seem limitless. From learning how various cultures perceive life to gaining an insight into who we are as individuals, we hope the journey will continue to be full of incredible discoveries. In an ever-globalizing world, let’s continue to connect outside of ourselves.
If you’ve made it this far down, we want to leave you with this:
You see, sometimes as humans, we often second-guess our most desired dreams because we fear the unknown or what other people will think of us and in life we may always feel like something is missing until we move past that barrier.
We plan to continue documenting the journey to share with you, so don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter. We welcome you to join us on this journey!
This resonates so hard. I’m about to share this with my lover lolol we talk about it so much but maybe we both need that push ya kno?
